Moniece Slaughter Says She Gets Paid Every Quarter for ‘Top Model’ Theme Song

You wanna stay on top? Ask Moniece Slaughter, who admits she still gets paid 17 years after recording the iconic America’s Next Top Model theme song.

What We Know:

  • The hit television show, that was created in 2003 by American supermodel Tyra Banks, has played across two networks and has had over 23 seasons. The competition features aspiring models going against each other to win over fans, sign a number of high-profile contracts, and become America’s Next Top Model.
  • The theme song, sung by Moniece Slaughter, has been used in almost every season of the show, including in other countries’ spin-offs of the show.
  • The Love & Hip Hop Hollywood star recently revealed her involvement in singing the show’s introductory tune. She made an Instagram story in reference to her early work captioning, “More America’s Next Top Model Money… ‘YOU WANNA BE ON TOP’ My dad is better than yours. My dad got me the gig to sing the theme song for the show fresh outta high school, and it still pays the bills. Thank you, daddy @davetake6.”

  • Moniece comes from a musically talented family. Her father, Dave Thomas, is a grammy award-winning gospel singer for Take 6. She also had a son with another Love & Hip Hop rapper, Lil Fizz.
  • This post comes after Moniece made allegations against television company VH1 over the lower pay grade for black reality TV stars. In an exclusive interview with The Jasmine Brand, she said her time on Love & Hip Hop was extremely frustrating.

“I, later on, found out that ‘Love And Hip Hop’ was listed as a 48-minute infomercial. Which allowed them to get away with not having to follow union rules or payout union pay. And so what that means is, you know, we can shoot more than 12 hours. They don’t have to give us per diem. They don’t have to give us, you know, a set budget for lunch. They don’t have to pay us bi-weekly, weekly. They don’t have to you know take out taxes,” Moniece commented.

  • VH1 has not addressed these allegations.
