About two weeks ago, Al Roker announced that he had prostate cancer and was going to need surgery. He’s home from the surgery and will be returning soon.
What We Know:
- Al Roker, NBC’s Today show weather anchor, will soon return to the show after surgery. While on the air two weeks ago, he stated that “It’s a good news-bad news kind of thing,” and he will be having it taken care of. Roker says one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes, mostly African American men.
- According to MSN, he gave fans an update on his health, writing on his Twitter and Instagram account, “Relieved to let you all know that my #prostatecancer surgery is done and back home.” He went public with his diagnosis in order to raise awareness for other men who it may affect.
- On USA Today, Roker says, “If you detect it early, this is a really treatable disease. And it’s why I wanted to take you along my journey, so we can all learn together how to educate and protect the men in our lives.” Some of the other health issues he is known to have had are obesity, knee surgery, and incontinence. He and his family are relieved to have him at home, and it’s uncertain as to when he would return on air. At the time of him making the announcement, he estimated that he would be back to work hopefully in about two weeks.
- After surgery, he shared pictures on social media of him and his wife, Deborah Roberts, and his son Nicholas. According to the TV personality’s doctor, Dr. Vincent Laudone, Roker’s cancer “appears somewhat limited or confined to the prostate,” and the two of them “settled on removing the prostate.”
We are glad that his surgery went well and hope that he has a speedy and safe recovery.
