Gospel legend Fred Hammond posted a video on Instagram Friday announcing that he had been diagnosed with COVID-19 earlier this week.
What We Know:
- The Detroit native, 59, said in a four-minute video on Instagram that he was on day five of his quarantine as of Friday. Hammond, in his remarks, said he let his guard down once and contracted the virus. His positive test came back Monday.
“I’m a mask wearer, but I let it down (and) my guard down in one place,” said Hammond, who now lives in the Dallas area, adding a family member also caught COVID-19 and was rushed to the hospital. The unknown family member is now recuperating.
- “The good thing is if this happened last year on the Commissioned tour, I probably wouldn’t have made it because I was really sick.”

- Hammond, who said he expects to pull through from the illness, added he was grateful that for the first time in a decade his health was good. He has a doctor that monitors his health during the day and has three others on call to answer questions.
“I thank God for that so now this has come I have a better chance of fighting it. I still have good hope,” said Hammond, noting he has lost friends to the virus. “I’m feeling better everyday. It is what it is. You can’t worry about it. God is in control.”
Hammond is a Grammy Award winning artist who’s been active for over 35 years. He’s often credited with creating the urban praise and worship genre that did not exist in gospel music.
