Global Coronavirus Cases Top 50 Million as U.S. and Europe Struggle to Contain Surges

Coronavirus cases around the world reached 50 million this past Sunday. The United States and Europe continue to struggle to contain surges as they experience record coronavirus cases.

What We Know:

  • The United States reached its highest single-day case count last Thursday at more than 100,000 cases in a single day. This is the fifth day in a row that the country has exceeded 100,000 cases in a day.
  • The U.S. leads the world in coronavirus cases, accounting for one-fifth of total cases. The U.S. has now reached 10 million cases and more than 239,000 deaths. The last millionth of cases was just added within ten days.
  • Across the U.S., the states have been experiencing thousands of new cases daily. Twenty-eight states have set new weekly case records, among them, Illinois recorded a new high of 12,000 cases in a day.
  • As we enter Winter, the virus is expected to surge as people spend more time indoors and around people outside of their immediate circles. Health experts say that the U.S. could experience more than 2,000 deaths a day by January.
  • European countries are also struggling to contain the surge. More than 300,00 people have died due to coronavirus across Europe. Europe accounts for about a quarter of coronavirus deaths and almost half of coronavirus cases. Germany, France, and the U.K. are all experiencing new restrictions.
  • France and Spain have declared states of emergency. Restrictions allow people to leave their home only for work, health, or emergency reasons. Everything non-essential will close up. These restrictions will be put into place until December 3rd.

As European countries introduce new restrictions to contain the surge, Vice President Mike Pence will be holding a White House Coronavirus Task Force meeting for the first time in weeks. Specific states are increasing restrictions allowing fewer people in stores and restaurants.
