A section of the road leading to the Dr. Michael Krop Senior High, the school which Trayvon Martin attended, now bears his name.
What We Know:
- The highschool named the road after Trayvon Martin, a Black teen shot the night of February 26th, 2012, in Sanford, Florida. Trayvon Martin was 17 at the time of his death and in the eleventh grade. He was shot dead walking back from a convenience store.
- Martin was unarmed and shot by George Zimmerman, coordinator of the neighborhood watch. They engaged in a physical altercation before Zimmerman shot Martin.
- Martin later claimed he shot Martin in an act of self-defense. In July 2013, Zimmerman was acquitted of his murder charges. This incident sparked the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement.
- The road was named Trayvon Martin Avenue after a brief ceremony Thursday morning near the school. The new name was approved last month by The Miami-Dade County Commission.
- On renaming the road, the school principal stated, “Our students every morning will come out here and see the road that bears Trayvon’s name. His name will continue forever”.
2020 has become one of the most significant years for the BLM movement. Martin’s memorial joins others such as Breonna Taylor’s and, hopefully, many more in an effort never to forget the lives of those who were unjustly taken.
