Hurricane Eta is the 12th hurricane and 28th major storm to hit the Atlantic during the 2020 season. As of the afternoon of November 3rd, the hurricane has been moving through Nicaragua. The hurricane is expected to cause catastrophic damage to Nicaragua and other high terrain areas in Central America.
What We Know:
- Hurricane Eta is a category 4 storm that has the possibility of becoming a category 5, according to the national hurricane center. This hurricane is record-breaking.
- As of now, 2020 has the most major storms since 2005, and a storm of Eta’s strength is not typical during November, making hurricane Eta the strongest hurricane during November since 2008.
- The storm is expected to quickly become a tropical storm and move westward. Life threatening floods and land slides are possible in multiple countries such as Mexico and Jamaica. There is a possibility the tropical storm will make it’s way to Cuba and southern Florida, but the Hurricane center says it’s too soon to determine the impact or severity if this happens.
- Organizations like UNICEF are preparing to assist the 1,227,000 people in Nicaragua that will potentially be affected, 500,000 of them being children.
Central America continues to prepare for this 12th storm that is quickly moving west, and Climate Prediction Center expects this hurricane season to be especially busy. The center is predicting 19-25 storms by the end of November.
