Karens have a bad reputation for being stereotypically entitled, selfish, and having an authoritative behavior beyond their reasonable means. But, a new study conducted by The New York Times and the Siena College Research Institute is here to approach Karens from a new perspective.
What We Know:
- The study was conducted over the last two months in 18 swing states across the United States. The survey method targeted over 17,000 potential voters and their voting preferences. Then, a database was composed to sort the information by voter preference and first names.
- Among the top 10 most common male and female names was the name “Karen”. The survey showed that 60% of all women named Karen preferred former vice president, Joe Biden, over Trump for the presidential election.
- The study also showed that men with the first name Richard preferred Donald Trump. They voted 64% in favor of Trump and 36% in favor of Biden. The two presidential candidates were evenly tied for the names Christopher and Joseph.
- In light of other female names, Biden won over the majority of women with the names Mary, Susan, Elizabeth, and Barbara. While Trump won over Nancy, Jennifer, and Linda.
Although these bizarre findings may or may not be enough to diminish the Karen name-shaming, one thing is certain: in the words of Larry J. Sabato, “Every election is determined by the people who show up”.
