Commemorative “Trump defeats COVID” coins are now available for preorder at the White House gift shop, starting at $100.
What We Know:
- The White House gift shop has introduced a new coin to commemorate President Trump’s bout with the coronavirus this week. The coin was designed by Anthony Giannini, the gift shop’s chairman. He described the coin as illustrating “President Trump’s ascendance over and defeat of the deadly COVID pandemic virus”.
- Giannini compared Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis to a boxer knocking out an opponent in the early rounds of a fight, saying that Trump “is a fan of boxing” and that the design “includes more than a hint of superhero qualities in history’s most fascinating president”.
- The coin became available for preorder a day before the president was released from Walter Reed Medical Center. President Trump was hospitalized on Friday and returned to the White House Monday evening. The president was given experimental drugs, such as Regeneron, that have not been approved by the FDA and are not available to the rest of Americans.
- More than 210,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 and that number continues to rise. President Trump has also sent mixed messages about coronavirus aid for Americans, seemingly advising Congress to halt all coronavirus aid discussions until after the election and then backtracking.
Trump’s commemorative coronavirus coin can be preordered for $100.
