A 5-Year-Old Boy Saves His Mother With the Help of Alexa

A five-year-old boy from Pennsylvania saved his mother’s life during an epileptic seizure using Amazon’s Alexa.

What We Know:

  • Tyrion Spann is and will always be his mother’s hero after he sprung to action to call for help while his mother was going through one of the worst epileptic seizures in her life. He used Alexa to call his grandmother, Natalie Neal, who lived an hour away from where Tyrion and his mother lived, which is why she programmed Alexa for Tyrion in case he wanted to call.
  • “I just thought for, you know, him to tell me, ‘Hey grandmom, I love you. Hey Gigi, I love you,” Neal said. On Sept. 20, Tyrion did just that and called his grandmother but under unfortunate conditions. Tyrion was alone with his mother at home when he noticed that she was unconscious. She was having an epileptic seizure. Tyrion didn’t hesitate to call his grandmother in tears to explain the situation. And it was the news Neal dreaded hearing.
  • “I thought he was laughing or joking and it turns out he was crying,” Neal said. “I’m telling him to calm down and he told me he couldn’t wake his mom up. So, of course, being her mom, my heart kind of fell to the ground a bit.”
  • Neal realized that she had to remain calm and explain to Tyrion that she was going to call 911. And although Tyrion was scared, he was managed to remain calm and open the door to the authorities when they arrived at the home. According to Neal, his daughter is proud of her son for saving her life and is doing well.
  • To Neal, this incident shows the power of technology. “I’m old school, so we were trained to call 911,” Neal said. “And I think in current times, our children have to learn how to use Alexa, the technology, to their advantage.”

The incident also inspired Tyrion to either become a police officer or firefighter.
