As election time draws closer, its apparent tensions are building for the big day. The 2020 campaign for the White House has recently reached an odd point, for as far as this year is concerned, it just seems like part of the course. President Donald Trump is now calling for his election rival to be drug tested before the debate on Tuesday. Joe Biden’s campaign was quick to respond.

What We Know:

  • A topic that has now come up in the presidential race, just before the first presidential debate, is questioning Biden’s actions aside from politics. Over the weekend, President Trump used his ever-popular Twitter account to speak unsupported statements that Biden allegedly takes performance-enhancing drugs.
  • Trump clearly stated that “[he] will be strongly demanding a Drug Test of Sleepy Joe Biden prior to, or after, the Debate on Tuesday night. Naturally, [he] will agree to take one also.” He later tries to target the fact that “his debate performances have been record-setting UNEVEN,” implying that only the use of certain drugs could have produced inconsistency in Biden.
  • Biden’s response remained neutral at the moment but could only laugh at Trump’s latest attempts to attack the Democratic Nominee. When a news reporter questioned him Sunday afternoon about the president’s remarks, he said “He’s almost …,” then cut himself off before saying he had no comment on the matter.

  • Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, has stated that “Vice President Biden intends to deliver his debate answers in words. If the president thinks his best case is made in urine he can have at it.” She later went on to say that they expect no different from President Trump, someone “who pissed away the chance to protect the lives of 200K Americans when he didn’t make a plan to stop COVID-19”.
  • Under normal circumstances, Biden’s campaign would refrain from entertaining Trump. They often refer to the majority of his comments as a distraction or blatant deception. For instance, Biden declined to comment on the fact that he’s opposed to adding more members to the Supreme Court last week. On the other hand, Bedingfield has refused to speak about Trump’s recent and bold claim that he is unwilling to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, should he lose this race to his rival.

In the end, Trump’s last-minute remarks about Biden allegedly using drugs and a call for drug tests of both candidates was too obscure of a chance for the Biden campaign to shrug off. Instead, campaign advisers would love for the process of this story to continue because it will not only show Trump’s concern for the upcoming debates but add on to his current tax records dilemma.
