Maya Moore Marries Man She Helped Free From Prison

WNBA star Maya Moore announced that she and Jonathan Irons have married. Moore fought for years to have Irons’ wrongful conviction overturned and he was freed in July.

What We Know:

  • Moore and Irons revealed their marriage on Thursday during their Good Morning America appearance. Moore announced that they had gotten married a couple of months ago during the pandemic. They shared details about their special ceremony and about their unique friendship and love story.
  • Moore met Irons in 2007 through a prison ministry program while he was serving his sentence at the Jefferson City Correctional Center in Missouri. Moore explained that her godparents and great uncle introduced her to Irons and his case and she quickly became drawn to his story. The two developed a strong friendship over the years and their romantic relationship progressed gradually. “Over time, it was pretty clear what the Lord was doing in our hearts and now we’re sitting here today, starting a whole new chapter together,” she said. While still in prison, Irons told Moore that he wanted to marry her, and he officially popped the question after being released in July.
  • Irons, 40, served 22 years of a 50-year sentence for an alleged burglary and assault from 1998. Moore, 31, put her WNBA career on hold in 2019 to work full-time on overturning his conviction. Irons’ conviction was finally thrown out in March of 2020.
  • Moore stepped away from her legendary basketball career while still in her prime. She has won league MVP, Rookie of the Year, and four WNBA championships with the Minnesota Lynx.

Since Irons’ release, the pair have continued to work on a get out the vote campaign called “Win With Justice”.
