The woman, 22, from Slovenia has been found guilty and sentence to two years in jail after purposely cutting off her hand to make a false insurance claim.
What We Know:
- A district court in Ljubljana, Slovenia stated, Julija Adlesic arranged with her boyfriend to have her left hand cut off above the wrist with a circular saw in their home in Ljubljana early in 2019. She had been found guilty of trying to commit insurance fraud.
- The court mentioned, about a year earlier, Adlesic signed contracts with five different insurance companies. The woman was set to collect more than 1 million euros, which is about 1.2 million USD, nearly half paid immediately and the rest in regular monthly installments.
- Adlesic’s boyfriend was sentenced to three years in prison while his father sustained a one-year suspended sentence.
- The pair allege Adlesic’s left hand was unintentionally sawed off as she cut branches at her house in the Slovenian capital. The pair left the hand at the location of the incident when they went to the hospital.
- Police claim the couple left the hand behind when they went to the hospital to ensure the injury was permanent, but Adlesic’s hand was recovered and reattached.
- Prosecutors stated that days before the incident, Adlesic’s boyfriend researched the internet about how artificial hands work. Officers say that this was another example of proof that it was done purposely.
- At the trial, the woman continued to state her innocence, saying she would never have purposely cut off her hand.
- At the court, Adlesic mentioned that her youth has been dismantled and that no one wants to be crippled. She also says she lost her hand at the age of 20, and only she knows how it happened.
Judge Marjeta Dvornik stated they feel the sentences are fair and appropriate and will set an example for others.
