The actress behind the beloved Lady Olenna Tyrell in the award-winning HBO series died Thursday, CNN reported.
What We Know:
- Rigg, who was diagnosed with cancer in March, died peacefully in her sleep. “It is with tremendous sadness that we announce that Dame Diana Rigg died peacefully early this morning,” her agent Simon Beresford said in a statement. “She was at home with her family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time.” Her daughter, Rachael Sterling, said she will “miss her beyond words”.
- The official Game of Thrones Twitter account posted in remembrance of her Thursday, quoting one of her character’s most memorable lines.

- Though she reached a new generation of fans through Game of Thrones, Rigg’s most notable role was as secret agent Emma Peel in The Avengers for which she was nominated for an Emmy award twice in her three year stint playing the character from 1965-1968. She later won an Emmy in 1997 for her performance as Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca.
- Her other accolades include a Tony award for playing the title character in Medea, and two BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards in 1990 and 2000.
Rigg also stared as Teresa di Vicenzo in the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, who Daniel Craig described as one of the most memorable Bond girls of all time.
