Jacob Blake Has His First Court Appearance

This Friday, Jacob Blake attended his first court appearance since he was shot seven times in the back by Kenosha police officer Rustin Sheskey.

What We Know:

• Blake pleaded not guilty to a previous allegation of felony third-degree sexual assault as well as new allegations of misdemeanor criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. Blake waived his right to a preliminary hearing and stated that he understood the charges being made against him.
• A $10,000 signature bond was approved by the judge in addition to the $500 cash that has been set for bail. Blake can only leave Wisconsin for medical treatment under the agreement. 
• Blake attended court via video conference from his hospital bed, to which he is cuffed by his ankle, as the police shooting paralyzed him from the waist down. Cell phone footage captured the moment Blake was shot by police on August 23 as officers responded to a woman reporting domestic abuse.

• According to his attorney, Patrick Cafferty, Blake was attempting to break up a dispute when police arrived.
• Police say the woman’s report was about Blake, who was allegedly attempting to take keys to a vehicle that wasn’t his. Responding officers, Rustin Sheskey, Vincent Arenas and Brittany Meronek, have stated that they were aware that Blake had an open warrant for sexual assault.
• Blake’s felony accusation, according to court documents, claims that he sexually assaulted a woman in her home on May 3, stealing her Ford Explorer and debit card, and making two fraudulent ATM withdrawals for $500. In the woman’s complaint, which she filed in July, she told police Blake had physically assaulted her several times over the past eight years. She waived a temporary restraining order against Blake.
• If Blake is convicted of the felony sexual assault charge, he could face ten years in federal prison and a $25,000 fine.

A pre-trial conference has been set for October 21 and jury selection is set for November 9.
