President Trump will be featured in all four days of the 2020 Republican National Convention, an unusual move more the nominee of either party, Fox News reports.
What We Know:
- Though the party’s nominee usually only appears on the final night of the convention to deliver his/her acceptance speech, President Donald Trump will show his face throughout the four-day event. In 2016, the President broke tradition by making a surprise entrance on the convention stage to introduce his wife Melania, but next week’s multiple-day appearances are another step up.
- President Trump will still deliver his acceptance speech on the fourth and final day of the convention from the White House, while others will participate with speeches of their own. First Lady Melania Trump and the President’s children, Donald Jr., Ivanka, Eric and Tiffany, are scheduled to speak along with Senators Tim Scott (R-SC) and Joni Ernst (R-IA) as well as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
- The convention’s theme has been dubbed “Honoring the Great American Story,” highlighting America’s “greatness, opportunity and President Donald Trump’s bold leadership.” The first day, Monday, August 24, will focus on “the Land of Promise,” Tuesday will emphasize the “Land of Opportunity,” Wednesday’s topic is the “Land of Heroes,” and Thursday will highlight the “Land of Greatness.”
- The 2020 Republican Convention was originally planned in Charlotte, NC, but coronavirus fears prompted the GOP to move its national celebration to Jacksonville, FL. Continued COVID-19 fears forced President Trump to cancel, pushing the convention to be mainly virtual. A small group of delegates, six from every U.S. state and territory, will gather in Charlotte to formally nominate President Trump under new COVID-19 regulations.
The Democratic National Convention kicks off Monday, August 17, just under a week since California Senator Kamala Harris was tapped to be Joe Biden’s Vice President.
