Nia DaCosta, also known for directing the highly anticipated reboot of Candyman that’s releasing later this year, has been chosen to direct the sequel of one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, Captain Marvel.
What We Know:
- DaCosta will now be Anna Bodn and Ryan Fleck’s directing successor to the, unsurprisingly, box office success of the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MSU) hit. Since the start of the vast MCU saga, Marvel has made it a habit to switch directors, even within the same franchises, as a way to give every installment a unique feel.
- Despite the studio meeting with a variety of other directors, DaCosta appeared to be the favorite pick for a while now. The current story editor of the upcoming Marvel-based series WandaVision, Megan McDonnell, wrote the script for the new Captain Marvel sequel. Brie Larson will, of course, be reprising her role as the superhero.
- The first film was released in March 2019 and became yet another $1 billion hit for the Disney owned subsidiary. Larson’s role as Carol Danvers was a byproduct of a war between two alien races, the Kree and Skrulls. After having survived an explosion from an alien ship, her body miraculously absorbed the energy, thus giving her incredible power.

- Naming DaCosta as director for Marvel’s next potential hit only demonstrates the studio’s drive to add diversity to its projects, in front or behind the camera. The budget for the film has yet to be revealed but it will surely be the largest of any Black female director to date. That title is currently held by Ava DuVernay, who directed A Wrinkle in Time, at $115 million.
- DeCosta’s rise branches off her directing role in the indie film Little Woods, and has since then joined the ranks of other flourishing female filmmakers like Cathy Yan and Chloe Zhao. Comic book giants such a Marvel and DC will hopefully continue this beautifully diverse trend.
The release date has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as many other blockbusters, to July 8th, 2022. Social media has since had a fair share to say and be excited about what DaCosta will bring to the table with her vision.
