Man Fatally Shot at 8-Year-Old-Son’s Funeral

Officers have apprehended a suspect accused of shooting a man in a parking lot where he was attending his eight year-old-son’s funeral.

What We Know:

  • A suspect has been charged with fatally shooting a man near an eastern park in Iowa, who was attending his son’s funeral who died of cancer, has been apprehended, police stated.

  • The Quad-City Times reported that 26-year-old Jeramie Shorter of Davenport, Iowa, was shot in the morning of Saturday outside of Weerts Funeral Home. Shorter was attending the funeral of Jermier Leon Shorter, of St. Paul, Minnesota, his 8-year-old son. Shorter was pronounced dead later that day.
  • Police that responded to the shooting said police noticed the suspect in an Infiniti sedan with no plates and tried to stop and pull the car over. In which case, the vehicle sped off, and police disengaged for fear that a high-speed chase through residential areas could hurt bystanders.
  • Police later found the suspect, who ran out on foot. He was located, apprehended, and arrested. While on the pursuit, the suspect, who was then identified as Nuemonei Tre Vonne Laster, 24, of Davenport, threw a bag containing a gun over a fence. Due to felony convictions from 2018, Laster is prohibited from having a firearm.
  • The potential motive for the fatal incident was not instantly known. There seems to be no connection between the victim and the suspect. On Sunday evening, Jeramie Shorter was remembered by family and friends with a balloon release. Jeramie Shorter’s father, Jamie Delaney Shorter, said he would be strong for the 17 children his son left behind.

Laster appeared on Sunday with charges of first degree eluding, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and interference with a weapon. Laster is currently being held on a $300,000 cash bond. The public defender’s office has been arranged to represent Laster, but still, no public defender was listed Monday morning for him.
