Disney World workers petition to delay reopening

Almost 7,000 Disney World workers signed a petition for a delay reopening as coronavirus cases surge in Florida at almost 100,000 cases and 3,173 deaths.

What We Know:

  • Disney World is set to open next month. Meanwhile, Florida sees a spike in coronavirus cases.
  • The petition stated the following: “While theme parks are a great way to relax and enjoy free time, it is a non-essential business; it is not fair to the people who work there to risk their lives, especially if they are at risk or have family members who are at risk. People are more important than making a profit.”
  • Several weeks before a Disney spokesperson told CNN business that the well-being of their employees is important to them and are working extensively in improving health and safety protocols.

  • The multi-billion dollar company placed the following protocols for employees and guests in order to reopen: face coverings, suspend parades, social distancing, and reducing the capacity amount of guests.
  • However, Disney World workers are asking Disney to re-evaluate the plan to reopen. Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek explained to CNN business on how they have done everything in their power to open “responsibly” and have taken guidance from local health, state health and national health officials to ensure a safe stay for guests and employees.
  • Internet sensation and most known group of hackers, “Anonymous”, shared their support for the workers on Twitter.

  • Ever since multiple businesses in Florida have started to open up again, the cases reached an all-time high and many health officials are pleading government officials to slow down the reopening of the state.
  • The famous theme parks are not the first ones to open up since COVID-19. Theme parks such as Universal, Island’s Adventure, as well as Disneyland in Shangai have also reopened their doors.

The ongoing petition has received about 50,000 signatures on change.org to delay the reopening of the theme parks. The ongoing pandemic has struck the United States as well as the world and there is currently no vaccine to protect the country.
