D.L. Hughley Tests Positive for COVID-19 After Collapsing During Stand-Up Show

With restaurants and local businesses reopening across the country, and following Dave Chappelle’s welcomed return to stand-up last week, comedian D.L. Hughley decided to perform a show to a packed bar. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go according to plan. The performer collapsed midway through his set, falling off the back of his chair before someone was able to catch him. Following the incident, he tested positive for COVID-19 at a Nashville hospital.

What We Know:

  • Hughley confirmed the diagnosis himself in an Instagram video today. He offered an explanation of what happened.

“They ran a battery of tests, and I also tested positive for COVID-19, which blew me away…. Apparently I just lost consciousness. So, in addition to all the other stuff you have to look out for, if your ass pass out in the middle of a show, onstage, you probably need to get tested.”

  • In the video provided by a patron of the comedy club, you can see the 57-year-old comedian stumble on his words before pausing his speech. He then begins to lean back on his stool. The staff sensed something was not right with Hughley, and one man rushed to his aid. He was caught, but still tumbled to the floor. The Zanies staff then rushed him out of the building.

  • Hughley, one of the original four “Kings of Comedy,” is a prolific writer, actor, and producer. He starred in numerous films such as Inspector Gadget, Scary Movie, Spy School, and just wrapped up working on Timothy Scott Bogart’s upcoming film, Spinning Gold. Off-Screen, he has been married to wife LaDonna since 1986 with whom he shares three children.
  • One look at Hughley’s Instagram page, and it’s clear that he’s been following every development and incident following the death of George Floyd. While promoting his new book, Surrender, White People! Our Conditional Terms for Peace, on SiriusXM’s The Joe Madison Show, he opened up about the current state of the nation, and the of removing statues and confederate leaders.

  • Hughley was particularly passionate about the need for Washington D.C.’s football franchise to change the team’s name.
  • In 2018, Hughley published a book titled, How Not to Get Shot: And Other Advice From White People, which became New York Times Bestseller. His first New York Times best seller was published in 2017 – Black Man, White House: An Oral History of the Obama Years.
