Mixed reactions on ‘I Take Responsibility’ video from celebrities

Celebrities such as Sarah Paulson, Aaron Paul, and many more have teamed up with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for a new campaign called ‘I Take Responsibility‘ that aims to call on white people to call out racism and support the Black Lives Matter movement.

What we know:

  • The series of protests since the death of George Floyd has outraged the community against police brutality and has caused many celebrities to use their platform to speak about racism.
  • The NAACP has launched a new campaign called ‘I Take Responsibility‘ with the help of celebrities such as Kesha, Sarah Paulson, and many more that have caused a backlash in the community.

  • The video starts off with several celebrities saying ‘I Take Responsibility’ and taking responsibility for being bystanders when it comes to injustices against African Americans as well as remaining quiet or explaining ‘away’ police brutality.

“We are done watching them die. We are no longer bystanders; we will not be idle. Enough is enough.”

  • However, the performance of the celebrities has caused backlash and mockery with the community causing their message to lose its cause and respect for the fight against racism.

  • Twitter users took on their twitter to comment on the lack of genuineness on the video and how it felt as if they were ‘acting’ and not taking ‘real responsibility and action’ as well as not donating to the organizations who are on the front lines.
  • English comedian, Ricky Gervais commented on the ‘I Take Responsibility‘ video on the “Terrible lack of diversity” and the lack of little effort on the fight against systemic racism.
  • However, there were a few supporters who supported the ‘I Take Responsibility‘ video and named the backlash a “way that prevents others from expressing their views”.

The NAACP or the celebrities involved in the video have not spoken out about the backlash on their ‘I Take Responsibility‘ video.
