Late NBA star Kobe Bryant was named the recipient of the Emmy Governors Award.

- Bryant was named the recipient of the 72nd Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award because of how active he was in the Los Angeles community, helping to improve it. The announcement was made Wednesday on Instagram and the Emmy website by The Television Academy.
- “The Television Academy is pleased to announce that basketball legend and philanthropist Kobe Bryant is the recipient of the 72nd Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award, selected by the Los Angeles Area Governors Award committee and recognizing his legacy of philanthropy, community building and inspiration that extended beyond the basketball court,” they said.
- This isn’t Bryant’s first time receiving an award. The former Los Angeles Lakers guard won five NBA titles and received an Academy Award for his short film Dear Basketball, a poem he had written to announce his retirement from basketball. Despite his retirement in 2016, Bryant will always be known as one of the greatest basketball players of all times along with some of the other greatest players like LeBron James and Michael Jordan.
- Kobe Bryant was not only active in the Los Angeles community but he was active when it came to his daughter, Gianna, playing basketball. Bryant was behind the Mamba Sports Academy, a well-known basketball camp, where he coached his daughter’s 8th grade basketball team.
- Unfortunately, tragedy struck on Jan. 26 when Kobe and Gianna, took a helicopter ride to Gianna’s basketball game, along with seven other passengers, but complications with the helicopter ended the lives of the passengers. Gianna was 13 and Bryant was 41.
Kobe and Gianna are and will always be remembered.
