21 year-old, Sean Reed, was fatally shot by Indianapolis police Wednesday evening after engaing in a car chase that was captured on Facebook Live.
What We Know:
- The Indianapolis Police Chief Chris Baily said the chase began when officers observed a vehicle driving recklessly on Interstate 65.
- Deputy Chief Kendal Adams was driving an unmarked police car when he saw a Toyota Corolla driving recklessly, almost hitting another vehicle. Chief Adams then began following the vehicle and called for back-up. Thats when Chief Randal Taylor joined the pursuit in another unmarked police vehical behind Adams.
- After marked police vehicles joined the chase, Deputy Chief Adams and Chief Taylor left, which is standard procedure for unmarked vehicles.
- After a 10 minute chase, a police sargent orderd the pursuit to end because of the high speeds.
- Then an officer saw the suspect driving east bound on 62nd street, where the suspect parked at a business.
- Once the officer got out of his vehicle, the suspect started running and there was a confrontation, Chief Baily stated.
- Its not clear what happened durring the confrontation.
- On the video recorded on Facebook Live, viewers can see Reed running from the police stating “I’m not going to jail today”.
- Moments later, Reed is trying to figure out where he has driven. He then appears to park his car and leave the vehicle.
- Within 18 seconds, you can hear Reed responding to another voice. About another 11 seconds go by when there is inaudible shouting. Then there is one, maybe two, pops and Reed appears to drop his phone or collapse, or both. Then there are sounds of more than a dozen other pops ring out.
- At that time, there were more than 4,000 people that had tuned in to watch the Facebook Live.
- Police Chief Baily stated a gun was found near Mr. Reed that had been fired twice. It was also stated that the officer did discharge their tazer at some point during the altercation. At this point in time, it is still unclear which shots were fired when.
- There were a total of 15 shell casings found at the scene from the two guns, indicating the officer had fired 13 shots.
- The officer was uninjured during the altercation and has not been identified at this time.
- Police say Mr. Reed and the officer were both Black men and were the only two at the scene during the altercation.
Mr. Reed had served with the Air Force for about nine months in 2017 and attained a rank of airman first class.
