Netflix has ordered a docuseries titled The Innocence Files.

What We Know:

  • The nine-episode documentary series examines the work of The Innocence Project, the nonprofit legal organization that is committed to exonerating wrongly convicted people using DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.
  • Here’s the official description: The Innocence Files shines a light on the untold personal stories behind eight cases of wrongful conviction that the nonprofit organization the Innocence Project and organizations within the Innocence Network have uncovered and worked tirelessly to overturn.
  • Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck, Innocence Project co-founders., released a statement about the upcoming series. “We are thrilled to be part of the groundbreaking Netflix series. This is truly important television. Each episode reveals – step by step – how the American criminal justice system gets it wrong. These stories feature people whose freedom was stolen because of governments’ reliance on junk science, discredited and suggestive eyewitness identification procedures, and prosecutors who engage in misconduct to win at any cost.”
  • The Innocence Files is executive produced and directed by Academy Award nominee Liz Garbus, Academy Award winner Alex Gibney, Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams. Some episodes are also directed by Academy Award nominee Jed Rothstein, Emmy Award winner Andy Grieve and Sarah Dowland.

The true-crime documentary is separated into three parts: The Evidence, The Witness and The Prosecution and will premiere on April 15, 2020. Watch the powerful trailer below.
