Nipsey Hussle’s Death Anniversary, What’s Changed

A year ago today, legacy hip hop star Nipsey Hussle lost his life by a gunshot wound.

What We Know:

  • On the anniversary of his death, fans are still mourning his loss and keeping his memory alive with touching tributes on social media.
  • On March 31, 2019, at the age of 33, Nipsey was the target of a fatal shooting in Los Angeles and passed away.
  • Nipsey’s tragic death took a toll on the music world as well the whole world. He is survived by his long-term partner Lauren London, their two-year-old son, Kross, and his seven-year-old daughter, Emani.
  • As a tribute today London took to Instagram to remember Nip, sharing a black-and-white photo of the rapper with a moving caption. “Miss you every second of every day and even in my sleep,” she wrote. “Until we are together again..Im holding it down.”

  • Murals of the rapper popped up in cities around the country. Former Present Barack Obama wrote a heartfelt letter that was shared during his memorial service and his musical talents were recognized with two posthumous Grammy Awards.
  • On Tuesday, Hip-Hop starts from T.I and Meek Mill, to Ditty and Trae the Truth shared messages paying tribute to the rapper.

  • Jay-Z also freestyled a tribute to Nipsey at a New York City concert last April. His lyrics said, “ Gentrify your own hood, before these people do it claim eminent domain and have your people movin’ That’s a small glimpse into what Nipsey was doing.”
  • Destination Crenshaw, which was named by Nipsey Hussle, is a 1.3-mile open-air museums to revitalize and recognize black Los Angeles though art and culture. Nipsey worked to help secure $10 million for its construction to inspie a generation of people of color.
  • According to GoodMorningAmerica, Nipsey invested his Crenshaw neighborhood by buying property and starting various business from his Marathon Clothing store, the co-working space Vector 90 to support entrepreneurs, restaurant, services shops, Marathon Studios, and more.

On April 4, 2019, Eric Holder was charged with Nipsey’s murder. He has pleaded not guilty and his latest hearing to set a trial date has been delayed amid coronavirus pandemic, according to The Associated Press.
