Jordan Peele is producing the highly anticipated updated take on 1992’s Candyman that was revealed back in 2018. Fans of the cult classic have been itching to take a peek at what Director Nia DaCosta had in store. Today, Universal has unleashed the trailer for a summer release so consider all of the hype warranted!
What We Know:
- Rather then it feeling like one of the many reboots these days, this film ends up feeling more like a return to the franchise. We find ourselves in present day Chicago, the place of the old Cabrini Green and the setting of the original film, with the lore about the mysterious Candyman staying true to the originals.
- During the special presentation of the trailer for the press, Peele shared it was DaCosta’s “geeking out” about the original film that made her the perfect candidate to direct this film. Her vision seems perfect, blending the gentrification of that era in Chicago with the horror and gore that played a major part that helped Tony Todd on the horror map.
- Watchmen’s own Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars as Anthony McCoy, an artist who has an interest in the Candyman urban legend that results in something definitely more frightening than waiting for a boogeyman to appear in a mirror after only saying his name three times.
- They made good on their promise of this not being a “parody” film. The trailer throws in a classic Destiny’s Child anthem (“Say My Name”) alongside loads of freakish violence and some nice callbacks. While DaCosta was dodgy on a question regarding Tony Todd, the original Candyman, being in the film, it was nice to see Vanessa A. Williams return.
- It’s interesting to note that in the first film, Williams played Anne-Marie McCoy friend to the lead character, and there was an Anthony McCoy in the first film, although he would’ve been a little boy.
The film is set to hit theaters on June 12.
