Former Trump advisor, Roger Stone is sentenced to 40 months in prison for lying to Congress.
What We Know:
- Stone has been found guilty on seven counts involving his continuous lying to Congress and witness tampering.
- Stone has lied to the House Intelligence Committee about contacting WikiLeaks, the Russian hackers’ interference website that consisted of the released damaging emails about the 2016 election between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton.
- In addition to the election, he also threatened a witness regarding his continuous efforts for Trump’s election in 2016.
- Stone is set to serve two years of probation after his sentence, pay a fine of $20,000, undergo substance abuse testing, and he must serve 250 hours of community service.
- Although his sentence is 40 months, the prosecutors originally asked for seven to nine years in prison but they withdrew from the decision. Attorney General William Barr retracted that recommendation hours after Trump criticized it on Twitter for being too harsh.
Trump expressed sympathy for Stone’s sentencing.
