Professor Under Fire for Comparing ‘Ok Boomer’ to N-word

Ok, Boomer is a term used in retaliation of a cross-generational dialogue between baby boomers and millennials.

What We Know:

  • An Oklahoma professor took the phrase too far, by comparing it to the use of the “N-word” in a senior journalism class. Since the inception of the professor’s utterance came out, the University of Oklahoma has denounced him.
  • According to the New York Post, Peter Gade, director of graduate studies at the university’s Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, thought it was appropriate to use the racial slur during the lecture.
  • During the lecture, the professor made it a point to develop comparisons about technology and social media; and, he suggested students focus more on the traditional aspects of the journalistic profession.
  • Students then contested that the professor should get with the times, and that prompted the professor to propose that the student’s comment was akin to saying, “Ok, Boomer”.
  • Gade said in the lecture, “Calling someone a boomer is like calling someone a n****r”.
  • The professor suggested the use of the word “Ok, Boomer” and the “N-word” were comparatively offensive; but, others thought differently.
  • Furthermore, students in the class immediately left after the remark.
  • Janae Reeves, one of three African American students in the course said, “I love Gaylord to death, [but] I’m already one out of three black students in that class. So it was only two of us to be in that setting and to hear that —  I shut down immediately after he used it.”

One Oklahoma student, Peter Farrell, posted about the incident calling the professor’s behavior despicable on Facebook; and, several others are suggesting the university fire the professor most expeditiously.
