Prosecutors have requested a federal judge to sentence former adviser to President Donald Trump to nine years in prison for lying.
What We Know:
- According to CNN, prosecutors are claiming Roger Stone is responsible for tampering with information included in the Russia Investigation against Trump.
- Prosecutors made a statement on Monday saying “Roger Stone obstructed Congress’ investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, lied under oath, and tampered with a witness. And when his crimes were revealed by the indictment in this case, he displayed contempt for this Court and the rule of law”.
- The multiple charges against Stone include one count of obstruction of an official proceeding, five counts of false statements (lying to Congress) and one count of witness tampering in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election.
- Based on the standards for this crime, prosecutors claim the appropriate sentencing is 87 months to 108 months in prison, which amounts to about seven to nine years. Stone’s attorneys claim that the appropriate sentence ranged from 15-21 months.
- Stone was first found guilty of all seven charges back in November.
- President Trump tweeted in response to the request of the prosecutors saying “The real crimes were on the other side, as nothing happens to them. Cannot allow this miscarriage of justice!”
- It is claimed that family have also reached out to the judge to ask for leniency on the sentencing.
- Stone’s witness tampering is similar to that of Paul Manafort who was sentenced by the same Judge (Amy Berman Jackson) that will sentence Stone on February 20th.
- Prosecutors also made mention to the fact Stone still defied the request for him to not speak publicly during the trial. Yet, Stone did not adhere by still posting on social media.
