HBO Max Will Stream Film About Russell Simmons’ Accusers After Oprah Backs Out

The documentary about women who have accused Russell Simmons of sexual misconduct, has been picked up by HBO Max after Oprah Winfrey exited the project as an executive producer last month.

What We Know:

  • The company said in a news release on Monday that the film, On the Record, will appear on HBO Max, the new streaming service set to launch in May.
  • Oprah Winfrey and Apple’s streaming service, Apple+, were the original backers of the documentary. They dropped the film last month due to a pressure campaign by Russell Simmons.
  • The announcement comes just over a week after the film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in January. The film got very high rated reviews and was was one of the most anticipated documentaries at the festival.
  • On the Record tells the story of the music executive Drew Dixon, who publicly accused Simmons of raping her in the early weeks of the #MeToo movement. Other women who accused Simmons of sexual misconduct will also tell their stories.

“Kirby and I are so proud to be teaming with HBO Max to give this film the outstanding platform it deserves and can’t wait for the public to see and hear the voices of these courageous women,” Amy Ziering, director of the documentary,  said in a statement.

The official date of On the Record‘s opening in theaters or on HBO Max has not yet been determined.
