‘The Color Purple’ Returning to the Big Screen for Black History Month

The Color Purple is undeniably Black history in Hollywood and will be making an appearance on the big screen for its 35- year anniversary.

  • The movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, starred celebrities like Danny Glover and Whoopi Goldberg, and was actually the debut film for Oprah Winfrey.
  • The film was adapted from the Pulitzer Prize Novel written by Alice Walker in 1982.
  • The Color Pruple was very successful upon the original debut 35 years ago, receiving 11 Oscar nominations.
  • The fictional story is embedded in the minds and hearts of so many Black people who have been influenced by the production.
  • Much of the film represents the discrimination Black women faced in the south and is a coming of age story about strength, self awareness, and growth.
