In 2016, Trump beat out Hillary with 306 Electoral votes to Clinton’s 232. In spite of Clinton’s loss, she still believes she can win the 2020 election.
What We Know
- Four years ago, the presidency slipped away from Hillary Clinton as the electoral votes were revealed. Trump won due to the electoral college favoring him. That would disuade most people from running again but not Hillary.
- During her interview with Variety magazine, Clinton was asked if she ever thought to herself “I could beat Donald Trump if I were running”. In response, Clinton said “Yeah. I certainly feel the urge because I feel the 2016 election was a really odd time and an odd outcome.”
- “And the more we learn, the more that seems to be the case. But I’m going to support the people who are running now and do everything I can to help elect the Democratic nominee”, Clinton added.
- When asked what she thought about the Electoral College Clinton said what we all were thinking on the day Donald Trump became the POTUS, “The person who gets the most votes should win”.
- Clinton supports getting rid of the Electoral College. “The Electoral College is an anachronism that foils the rights of the majority of Americans to choose our leaders.”
- Clinton believes she can win partly because the perception of Trump has changed since 2016. “I think there’s a story now to be told. Before he was a blank slate. He was a guy that people saw on their TVs. As you know, he was a reality TV star,” Clinton said, according to the Associated Press. “Now I think there’s a record that he’s going to have to be held accountable for.”
This isnt the first time Clinton has alluded to wanting to go toe to toe with Trump again. Last October, when President Trump tweeted that “Crooked Hillary Clinton” should enter the race, she shot back: “Don’t tempt me. Do your job.”
