In 2000, white Texas Christian University students “celebrated” MLK day by eating friend chicken and watermelon. This year, TCU is once again in the news for a possible race related issue.
What We Know:
- What was supposed to be a fun trip for the John V. Roach Honors College student, became a nigtmare that resulted in Jane Doe No.1 contemplating suicide.
- As a member of the honors college, Doe had the opportunity to study abroad in Europe or Japan or take a trip to Washington, D.C. In the suit, Doe alleges that she was urged to attend the summer program in D.C. even though it was not her first choice.
- Doe claims that she and another black student were picked to attend the D.C. trip as a way to prove how “inclusive” and diverse the university was. That facade was lifted once Doe realized her and the only other black student on the trip did not have beds. The 6 foot, 180 pound student was forced to sleep on the couch.
- Later on in the trip, Doe, who is asthmatic, experienced the most distress after walking several miles in the sweltering heat. During the walk, Doe alledges Diane Snow, the Dean of Honors College, began harassing her and the other black student for lagging behind the group.
- The suit claims the honor’s college dean “aggressively pushed herself between” the students and assaulted Doe “by aggressively placing her hand on Jane Doe No. 1’s back and forced her to the front of her peers”.
Diane Snow and five other TCU staff have been named in the suit. TCU representatives refused to comment on the lawsuit.
