Joker is a controversial film where Joaquin Phoenix gave insight into the famous character while giving us a dark and twisted take on the origin story in a performance critics acclaimed to be a masterpiece.
What We Know:
- Phoenix is unapologetic when it comes to speaking his mind especially to his Hollywood peers and many are speculating that Phoenix talked to Beyonce privately to discuss the seated snub.
- A lot of Phoenix’s fans were not happy. Many took to Twitter to debate the move, while others slammed it because it was considered to be a huge sign of disrespect. Twitter user, Kilee Hall wrote, “Beyonce remained seated while everyone else gave a standing ovation to a Joaquin Phoenix — a man who’s been through so much in his life and has never got the appreciation he deserves.” While another user wrote, “Can anyone give me a proper excuse b4 I lose all respect for her?”
- Others disagreed, by arguing that the “Formation” singer had every right to remain seated. While others argued there was no statement at all. One pointed out, “Let’s not create any mess here… she most likely didn’t stand because she would be in the way when he walked by. She smiled and clapped.”
Phoenix changed the topic of conversation from climate change to wealthy and privileged members in the audience. “It’s great to vote but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives. I hope that we can do that — we don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards sometimes or back, please…I’ll try to do better and I hope you will too.”
