Congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis has been diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer.
What We Know:
- Lewis, 79, was diagnosed with the illness during a routine medical visit. “This month in a routine medical visit, and subsequent tests, doctors discovered Stage IV pancreatic cancer. This diagnosis has been reconfirmed,” Lewis stated in a press release shared today.
- Lewis has served as U.S. Representative of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District since November 1986 but has been serving his community and the civil rights of others since the 1960s. His district includes most of Atlanta and he plans to continue serving his constituents as he undergoes treatment.
- “To my constituents: being your representative in Congress is the honor of a lifetime. I will return to Washington in coming days to continue our work and begin my treatment plan, which will occur over the next several weeks. I may miss a few votes during this period, but with God’s grace I will be back on the front lines soon.”
Our prayers are with Congressman Lewis.
