Uber Driver Blessed By Passenger

Latonya Young’s dreams of going back to school were granted when she was blessed by one of her passengers.

What We Know:

  • While driving for Uber a year ago, Latonya Young picked up Kevin Esch outside of Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Esch was going through a life-altering change that required him to move and during the ride he and Young fell into an unusually deep conversation compared to typical ride share experiences.
  • Esch revealed that he was getting divorce and Young elaborated on her desires to re-enroll at Georgia State University to complete her degree once should could pay off the nearly $700 in outstanding debt.
  • When they arrived at Esch’s destination, they both wished each other well, Esch exited the vehicle and tipped Young, a single mom of three, $150.
  • The next time Young would heard from Esch was via text, to let her know that he had paid off her outstanding $693 balance and that she could now re-enroll at GSU.
  • Young recalls Esch telling her that she was never too old to get an education. “It just made me feel good to do it,” Esch told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I didn’t expect anything from it.”
  • Young said Esch’s good deed, along with his belief that she could do this, was the last push that she needed to re-enroll at the university.
  • The pair stayed in touch during the year with Young updating Esch on her classes and grades.

Young received an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and even included Esch in her graduation photo shoot.
