British Labour Party Leader Steps Down After Loss

The recent British election resulted in a 191-368 seat defeat for the far-left British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn. The conservatives have the majority in Parliament. He announced he will resign as the party’s leader.

What We Know:

  • The conservatives in the UK are more similar to moderate Democrats in America rather than Republican conservatives. They still believe in government-run healthcare and social programs, but tend to differ with more far-left parties with their views on immigration and Brexit. The labor party was seen as too radical in this election. Most analysts see their downfall in the election was due to them going too far left, according to the Daily Wire.

  • Corbyn said in a statement: “I will discuss with our party to ensure there is a process now of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward and I will lead the party during that period to ensure that the discussion takes place as we move on into the future.”
  • These exit polls have been the most devasting since 1935. Corbyn was criticized for his lack of tackling antisemitism and terrorist groups in the country. Former Labour interior minister Alan Johnson said “We knew he was incapable of leading. He’s worse than useless.”

Boris Johnson will have the majority in Parliament and will be looking to finish Brexit by the beginning of next year.
