The House voted to pass a resolution that confirms the impeachment inquiry.
What We Know:
- It resulted in a 232-196 vote which was mostly partisan. Republican Justin Amash (Minnesota) voted yes, while Democrat Collin Peterson (Minnesota) and Jeff Van Drew (New Jersey) voted no, according to the Daily Wire.
- Nancy Pelosi has been ambivalent to the question of impeachment in the past, even resulting in being passive-aggressive towards reporters that questioned her on it.
- This resolution sets the rules that the House Intelligence Committee will have to follow. Keep in mind this process already began before the resolution was passed. This also puts representative Adam Schiff (California) in charge of the inquiry. He has the power to order subpoenas and compel testimony. Unfortunately, he has been criticized in the past by Republicans for creating false narratives about the Trump-Ukrainian call.
- Republicans have called this inquiry a sham. Ivanka Trump took to Twitter to write “…surrounded by enemies and spies catching and perverting every word that falls from my lips or flows from my pen, and inventing where facts fail them.” -Thomas Jefferson’s reflections on Washington, D.C. in a letter to his daughter Martha. Some things never change, dad!”
