Christina Koch and Jessica Meir became the first all-female group to carry out a spacewalk.
What We Know:
- Allegations of sexism arose earlier this year when the mission, to replace a power controller known as a BCDU on the International Space Station, was initially canceled due to a lack of proper suits.
- Koch is an electrical engineer and was hooked up to the station’s robotic arm during the mission, this was her fourth. Meir is a scientist and this was her first spacewalk so she used handles for support.
- Nancy Pelosi celebrated and called them “an inspiration to women & girls across America.” Donald Trump congratulated via teleconference stating “You represent this country so well. Our country is very proud of you.” He finished with “First the moon and then we go to Mars.”
- After all of the positive outreach, Meir went on to say that “We don’t want to take too much credit because there have been many other female spacewalkers before us.”
NASA is also looking to send it’s the first woman to the moon in the future, according to phys.
