Yes, you read that correctly. Warner Bros. has set a prequel of the 2001 crime-thriller film Training Day in motion, which starred Denzel Washington as Alonzo Harris, a somewhat crooked cop. At this time, there is no word of involvement from Washington at the moment.
What We Know:
- Washington delivered an award-winning performance which contributed to the multiple nominations Training Day received. He ultimately secured his second Oscar in 2002 for best actor and the film went on to gross more than $100 million worldwide.
- Sources told Collider that screenwriter Nick Yarborough is set to write the prequel which will reportedly pick up around the time of the L.A. Riots, the aftermath of the infamous Rodney King verdict, and will follow the life of Washington’s character 10 years prior to the original taking place.
- Between 2016-2017, Jerry Bruckheimer produced a television series based on the movie, but it unfortunately only lasted for one season.
- Washington was 46 when the film invaded theaters. So, if a prequel is set to develop with a setting that occurs 10 years prior, we would need a 36 year-old Washington. The talented John David Washington, Washington’s son, is 35 and sounds very similar to his father. As of now, neither of the two are connected to the film but we have hopes that at least John, if not his legend of a father, are included.
Since the original producer of Training Day died in 2005 and the project is in its early phases, there is no word on who will direct or produce the new addition.
