New Demonstrations Against President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi Planned in Egypt

New plans in Egypt have been found to hurt President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

What We Know:

  • On Friday, September 27, thousands of Egyptian citizens came together and protested President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s new five-year rule. According to Egypt’s parliament, the country ruled that el-Sisi’s new term would be extended from four years to six, making him eligible to run for President again in 2024.
  • The protestors gathered in many cities throughout Egypt, including the capital, Cairo. Egyptian police officials were able to end many of the protests before they got out of hand, due to some of them being a part of security forces.
  • When reporters asked President el-Sisi if he was concerned about the attacks, he said there was no reason to be. “Egypt is a strong country thanks to Egyptians,” el-Sisi stated while speaking to reporters at the airport.
  • Earlier that Friday morning, el-Sisi flew to New York for UN General Assembly meetings. During those meetings, some of his American supporters stood outside, while holding the Egyptian flag and pictures of el-Sisi. Back home, in a Cairo suburb, there were also peaceful protests being held in support of el-Sisi.
  • While holding the Egyptian flag and repetitively chanting “We are with you”, many of these protests were small and intimate. Meanwhile, those Egyptian citizens that were protesting against el-Sisi were arrested and had their phones examined for political attack information.

We are sending prayers to the country of Egypt, as well as, President el-Sisi. Hopefully the attacks cease soon.
