Driver Arrested After Driving Through Mall in Chicago

The suspect who drove an SUV through a Chicago mall was arrested.

What We Know:

  • On Friday, September 20 around 2:30 PM, an unidentified 22-year-old man drove a black Chevy Trailblazer through the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Chicago. Many people were unaware of what was happening but witnesses say they heard voices screaming “active shooter.”
  • The suspect entered the car by a Sears and Rainforest Cafe, he maneuvered through the mall while frightening shoppers and knocking over kiosks, before ultimately crashing into a pillar. The suspect was then detained temporarily by two off-duty officers and others in the mall until police arrived on the scene to take the suspect into custody.
  • Police denied social media reports that a shooting occurred as no bullet casings were recovered in the mall. According to police, three people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The FBI is assisting in the investigation but says there is no known threat to public safety at this time.
  • Woodfield Mall management has released a statement saying “The authorities believe this to be an isolated incident involving one person who has been arrested. We are grateful no one was injured, and thank our security team and the police for their quick response.”

The unidentified man is currently being questioned at the Schaumburg police headquarters.
