Demonstrations taking place ahead of Climate Summit

Students all over the world are skipping class to protest climate change. Teachers have been barred from protesting, according to NPR.

What We Know:

  • More than 800 marches were planned across the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
  • In New York City specifically, 1.1 million students were allowed to skip school Friday after they learned they wouldn’t be penalized. Bill De Blasio, who just dropped out of the presidential race, tweeted out “New York City stands with our young people. They’re our conscience.”

  • Different parts of our world are facing issues due to climate change. In India there is a massive water crisis, leaving millions without water, according to CNN. A total of 21 major cities are poised to run out of groundwater next year. Wealthy citizens have resorted to transporting water through other provinces.

  • In France, hundreds of activists are raging in the heart of Paris. “The issue is that our leaders divide us. They forget all of those at the bottom of the pyramid, the weakest. We must stop fossil fuels, we need to fight against plastic and pesticides,” stated 62-year-old Jean-Baptiste Redde from Bourgogne.

These protests are all wonderful. Although, it’s sad that no one showed up to Area 51 today, clearly the more important subject.
