When people such as professors see Curtis Lawrence, they ask him if he is visiting or if he is someone’s younger brother, while others will ask him how old he is and how is he here. Lawrence will have to explain that he is a part of a program that only 15 out of 200 students are a part of.
What We Know:
- School Without Walls High School (SWWHS) is a prestigious high school located on the campus of George Washington DC. It was established in 1971. SWWHS provides every student the opportunity to prepare for college with a humanities program which offers global and local resources.
- Curtis Lawrence is apart of the program and and his younger brother Corey Lawrence is trying to follow in his footsteps. Corey said, “it’s Curtis. He’s really ahead of me and I want to follow in his footsteps.”
- As a 14-year-old, Curtis Lawrence says the transition must be a stressful experience, but School Without Walls has prepared him for the adjustment.
- In an interview with ABC 6 Marlene Lawrence, Curtis’ mother talks about her son’s experience at the University. “I think when people see him, they think he’s a third-grader. When he speaks, they say OK, this kid is advanced. He’s not in third grade.”
- Curtis and Corey aren’t the typical high school freshmen. They are already planning out their careers. After the program, Curtis’ goal is to continue his education at Florida A&M, majoring in Computer Science and Paleontology. While 13-year-old Corey plans to attend Hampton University or George Washington University and become an astrophysicist.
Curtis is currently the youngest student in George Washington University’s traditional undergraduate on-campus program.
