Memphis Police Charge 3 Mississippi Men With Civil Rights Intimidation

Mississippi natives Christopher Elder, Joshua Matheny, and Michael Matheny have been charged by the Memphis Police with civil rights intimidation and attempted robbery.

What We Know:

  • These charges stem from the three men allegedly attacking two black men in a downtown parking garage on September 2.
  • One of the victims, Shane Smith, told a local ABC station that the three men yelled racial slurs at him as they attacked him, resulting in ten stitches for a busted lip.
  • “They called me ‘n*****,’ they had taken one n*****’s shoes. They said they were going to take another one’s. They tried to take my stuff from me, but luckily they weren’t able to take anything,” Smith said.
  • Unfortunately, Smith was not the only victim that night. Memphis police also confirmed that the three men also robbed another victim for his $200 sneakers.
  • After this incident, Smith is grateful it did not escalate even further, stating he was “just thankful” he walked away with minor injuries.

Praying for these two victims to have a speedy recovery.
