LeBron James is denied ‘Taco Tuesday’ Trademark

Lebron James attempted to trademark the phrase “Taco Tuesday” through his trademark company.

What We Know:

  • On August 15, 2019, through his company Lebron James Trademarks LLC, Lebron James filed an application to trademark the phrase “Taco Tuesday”. However, the examining attorney for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied his request.
  • The patent office believes that the word is too common stating the phrase is “a commonplace term, message or expression widely used by a variety of sources that merely conveys an ordinary, familiar, well-recognized concept or sentiment”.
  • The basketball star loves to share his “Taco Tuesday” festivities on his social media platforms. He had hoped to use the trademarked phrase on many different platforms including audio/video works, podcasts, social media, and entertainment platforms.
  • Lebron James is not the first celebrity to try and take ownership of a marketable phrase. Rap star Cardi B has submitted an application for “Okurrr” and fellow rap artist Megan Thee Stallion has also submitted one for “Hot Girl Summer.”

Despite Lebron’s efforts, “Tacos on Tuesday” and “Taco Tuesday” belong to everyone.
