KFC Vetting Meatless Fried Chicken Option In Atlanta

KFC announced Monday that they were becoming the first national fast-food chain plant-based chicken partnered with El Segundo, California-based Beyond Meat.

What We Know:

  • KFC started testing the new Beyond Fried Chicken in one of its Atlanta’s restaurants on Tuesday located in Smyrna, Georgia.  The meat alternative was available in nuggets and boneless wings tossed in one of three sauces: Nashville Hot, Buffalo or Honey BBQ.
  • Based on the success of the testing in Atlanta, the company will have a national test and a potential national roll-out.
  • A KFC representative said that the plant-based chicken boneless wings and nuggets sold, in just five hours, as much chicken as it would sell of its famous popcorn chicken in an entire week.
  • Many people loved the latest addition to the KFC family, but it was a bittersweet moment. According to Beyond Meat CEO and founder, Ethan Brown, the only regret is not seeing Colonel Sanders enjoy this moment.
  • This isn’t the only plant-based phenomenon with Burger King launching their planted based patty with an Impossible Whopper that it is available nationwide for a limited amount of time.

The demand for plant-based products has been rising because people are reducing meat consumption due to health concerns.  We’ll see what else these companies come up with.
