Deadly Crash in Dayton Leaves 2 Dead and 10 Injured after Suspect Steals Police Cruiser

Two children were killed and at least 11 injured after a stolen police car crashed into two cars.

What We Know:

  • A stabbing suspect crashed into two vehicles in Dayton, Ohio on Monday in a stolen police car. Police received a report of a stabbing on Monday evening, but the suspect had fled the scene upon arrival. After he fled the scene, the suspect crashed his red pickup truck into a tree, at which point he got out of the vehicle and stole a police car. Minutes later the suspect drove a stolen cruiser into two parked cars outside the Dayton library containing at least 11 people, five of them children.
  • Witnesses explain the scene was frightening and confusing; Witnesses report that a car hit the stolen police car as it drove near the library, causing it to spin and hit the cars in front of the library. “I was terrified. There were car parts flying all over the street,” witness Tiffany Hamiel said. Other witnesses got out of their own cars to help pull children out of one of the vans that were hit. After the crash, witnesses reported the suspect was running between the wrecked cars and ran into his stolen car when police arrived. He then drove backward while police chased his vehicle as they failed to catch him for some time.
  • Dayton police confirmed the individuals who were killed were two six-year-old children. The suspect is now being held in custody and treated for injuries. The area of the inspection was reopened Tuesday as police figured out what occurred, and two police officers were minorly injured in the incident.
  • The incident has caught special media attention as it comes just weeks after a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio that left nine people dead and another 16 injured. This mass shooting occurred mere hours after another mass shooting in El Paso, Texas that left 20 dead and 26 more injured.

Dayton is receiving public support following more tragic casualties in the area this year.
