Over seventy-eight thousand people have reportedly signed a petition, recalling the new Weight Watcher’s app.
What We Know:
- Kurbo is an app invented by Weight Watcher’s that is supposed to help kids and teens, within the age range of eight to seventeen, reach a healthier weight. Initially the app seemed like a good idea, especially with America having the highest obesity rate. Unfortunately, some parents and nutritionists feel that the app is too focused on weight loss and could easily hurt the kids’ relationship with food.
- Kurbo uses the Traffic Light System, which separates foods into red, yellow and green groups; green being the healthiest food group.
- Kurbo also offers one-on-one coaching for a fee, to help kids track their food, as well as, their behaviors towards certain foods.
- According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), there are over thirty million people in the U.S., of all ages and genders, that suffer from an eating disorder.
- The app has a feature that shows before and after pictures, as well as, testimonials from fellow eight-year-olds about there weight loss journey. Some parents feel this is a form of body-shaming.
Though the features of the app may be too extreme for some while others find it beneficial. We’ll just have to wait and see how things play out with this new app.
