A rap music video got six households in the Del Monte Manor complex in Seaside, California evicted.
What We Know:
- The music video was for a track called ‘We Crippin’ by rappers N. Sane Ready and Da Bigg Homie. The song has been described as promoting gang activity and violence.
- TerraCorp, the complex management company, claims the residents were involved in “criminal or wrongful activity” and participated in “an unauthorized and unpermitted film project involving what appeared to be a music video on the premises,” Monterey County Weekly reported.
- Da Bigg Homie, formally known as Michael Mckinney, disputes this idea. He told Complex, “Our intentions were to unite, not destroy relationships and create more adversity.”
- He also claims that “multiple established rivals on the scene during filming, solely for the purpose of ending long term issues, while honoring and paying tribute to a beloved, and fallen community member.”
- Mckinney claims there was no violence on the set and police were on the scene during filming.
- Advocates for the evicted tenants are outraged with the situation. Princess Pope told the Grio that two military veterans were among those ordered to leave the complex within 90 days. She also stated that the eviction was extreme.
- The apartment complex is low-income housing, overseen by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
- A HUD spokesman explained that “Unless there are allegations of unlawful discrimination and a formal complaint has been filed, HUD has no authority to intervene in ongoing evictions.”
