Two bodies found in Canada are two teen suspects wanted for multiple murders, officials said at a press conference on Wednesday.
What We Know:
- Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, were wanted in Canada for second-degree murder in connection with three murders in British Columbia. Police have been searching for McLeod and Schmegelsky over the past two weeks.
- “At 10am this morning, Manitoba RCMP officers located the bodies of two males, believed to be the BC suspects, near the shoreline of the Nelson River (approx 8km from the burnt vehicle),” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement on Twitter.
- RCMP Assistant Commissioner Kevin Hackett said in a press conference there is “significant evidence” linking McLeod and Schmegelsky to three murders, according to CBS. A North Carolina woman, Chynna Deese, and her Australian boyfriend, Lucas Fowler, were found near their van on the side of the road over a week ago.
- Police identified the third victim as University of British Columbia Professor Leonard Dyck. His body was found 300 miles away from where the traveling couple was discovered. Dyck’s body was found about a mile from a burned-out camper that the two teens had been driving.
- “At this time, we are confident that these are the bodies of the two suspects wanted in connection with the homicides in British Columbia,” read a news release from RCMP. A police helicopter spotted a damaged boat along the Nelson River last week and a follow-up search uncovered the items directly linked to the two teens.
Autopsies will be conducted in Winnipeg to determine the cause of death.
